Where Did it All Start?
When Bill Gates was 13 years old, he found great interest in technology and thus absorbed himself in it. He recalled as a student at the Lakeside School in Seattle, Washington. That the school’s Mothers Club gathered money for a cable that would, connect the phone lines with a GE-time sharing Computer.
The machine that he states changed his life. He took much of his time learning about computers, as well as coding and hacking. Gates also wrote his first computer software at Lakeside. This program allowed the user to play tic-tac-toe against the computer.
This is where he met Paul Allen and thus created a fellowship over their love of technology. Later, they would have together co-founded Microsoft.
In 1973, Gates enrolled at Harvard University as a pre-law student. After 2 years, He took a leave of absence. To create the computer software company Microsoft, alongside his school friend Paul Allen.
Bill Gates never returned to Harvard. More than 30 years later, Harvard awarded him with an honorary doctorate.
The Early Days of Microsoft
In April 1975 was when the creation of Microsoft came to be. It all started when Gates and Allen had inspiration to develop of BASIC (A programming language) for the Altair 8800 system. This was the first microcomputer.
They then went to license their own MS-DOS. This had no picture, but rather a black screen. This needed its user to type computer commands to be able to open a program.
Windows 1 is Microsoft’s first computer. Created in 1985, but the real success for Microsoft was Windows95. This helped bring the company into popular culture. It sold 1 million copies in its first week and about 40 million in its first year.
Allen originally came up with Micro-Soft for the name. As a mix of words of Micro (Microcomputer) and Soft (as in Software). The name was registered on November 26th 1976.
The Revenues of the company totalled to $16,005 by the end of 1976.
Microsoft remodelled itself in June 1981. To become an incorporated business and the change of name to Microsoft Corporation, Inc. This change made Gates the president and chairman of the board and Allen executive vice president.
With the use of Microsoft programs, Microsoft Word would be first released in the spring of 1983. Free bundles of the program were with the November 1983 issue of PC World. This would make it one of the first programs to be released on a disk.
How Is Microsoft Going Today?
As of April 2022, Microsoft has a worth of $49.4 billion. Branching out to owning the rights of Skype, Mojang (Minecraft), LinkedIn, and a few others.
As of January this year, Microsoft has made a deal to buy Activision Blizzard (Video game company) for $68.7 billion. As stated by Satya Nadella (CEO and chairman of Microsoft)

Speaking of the gaming industry. Microsoft has also created and owns the well-known video game brand Xbox. First introduced in 2001 it sold over 24 million units in May 2006. Microsoft then released the Xbox 360 in 2005 and thus had sold over 86 million units as of October 2021.
There are so far 4 generations of the Xbox gaming console. With the latest called the Xbox Series S and X, both released in November 2020.
From Bill Gates to Billionaire
On the behalf of Microsoft’s success, Bill Gates became a millionaire at 23 years of age. To then becoming a billionaire at the age of 31. This made him the youngest billionaire at the time. Holding that record from 1987 up until 2010.
Gates has also invested in stocks with companies that deal with a range of specific areas.
Bill Gates has the largest share in the Berkshire Hathaway, Inc (BRK. B). With an approximately 28.7 million shares. Gates developed a close relationship with Warren Buffett (Chair and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway). Ever since they first met in 1991. Gates also served on the Board of Directions with Berkshire Hathaway up until March 2020. They have both have given away a notable amount of their money to humanitarian causes.
Despite being a billionaire, Gates has pledged and donated very much of his money to charities and causes. He and his ex-wife formed a foundation called The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). Thus merging the other foundations that Bill Gates created into one.
The foundation got launched in 2000 and has become the 2nd largest charitable founded in the world, as of 2020.
Recently, as of July 2022, Gates has stated that he plans to give all his wealth to his own Foundation (The Gates Foundation). Mentioned on his Twitter account in 2 separate tweets.

His Personal Life
He may only be known for his efforts and co-founder of Microsoft. Gates is also an investor, author and a philanthropist. He does, as we all have, a personal life.
So what makes Bill Gates, be Bill Gates?
Foremost, he is an avid reader, he refuses to stop reading a book even if he doesn’t like it. Thus, will write notes on the margins of the pages. He makes it a priority to read and has been noted that he can read about 150 pages an hour. His home has a large library, and 2 secret bookcases.

Among other things, Bill Gates enjoys playing Tennis in his spare time. He also frequently watches professional tennis tournaments.
Gates is also a father of 3 children. He has 2 daughters, Jennifer, Phoebe and a son, Rory. Although, him and his wife, Melinda, got a divorce in 2021, ending their 27-years of marriage.
Whilst being separated, they continue to work together and have a partnership with their Bill and Melinda Gates foundation.
What has Bill Gates Achieved?
In the Computer and Technology field, Gates has achievement very much. From the advancement of computer technology in the 1980s to what we are lucky to have now.
Bill Gates has been recognised in Time magazine of the years, 2004/2005 and 2006. Name as one of the 100 most influential people.
Gates has also received many honorary doctorates from many institutes and universities.
He was also made an honorary knight commander of the order of the British Empire (KBE) by Queen Elizabeth in 2005. To also being honoured with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by the former American president, Barack Obama. Solely for his philanthropic efforts, with his foundation, alongside his ex-wife.
In 2022, Gates received the Hilal-e-Pakistan for the social work in the Country. This is the second-highest civilian award (Within the Hilal hierarchy) of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
With Microsoft and the technological changes of the 1980s, 1990s and, early 2000s. We have seen many changes with computers, programmes, and the technology behind them today.
Bill Gates is very well known and is often listed as one of the great Entrepreneurs. Alongside Steve Jobs (Apple) and Walt Disney (Disney), to name a few.
